Ottawa is ranked among the world’s most desirable cities to call home. With a population of over 1.2 million, the Ottawa region is the fourth-largest urban area in Canada and home of the Government of Canada, Parliament, the Senate, and the Supreme Court of Canada.
Canada's capital city has a wide range of cultural events, recreational activities, and seasonal festivals. Ottawa has a wealth of parks, forests, waterways and open spaces covering an area of 4,662 square kilometres (1,800 square miles). Residents have access to hundreds of kilometres of cross-country ski and bicycling trails, plus rollerblading and jogging paths which crisscross the region and wind alongside the three rivers and Rideau Canal.
Just minutes from downtown are some of the region's finest beaches, parks, golf courses, waterways, downhill ski and white water rafting sites and hundreds of lakes of cottage country. Ottawa also offers the world's longest outdoor skating rink, skydiving, bungee jumping, hot air ballooning, moonlight snowshoeing expeditions, windsurfing, skateboard parks, kayaking, scuba diving and tranquil gondola rides on the Rideau Canal.
There are hundreds of national and local museums, galleries and theatres, heritage sites and a variety of nightclubs, restaurants, and world-class shopping malls and outdoor markets.
From music festivals and live performances of pop, folk, blues, rock, Celtic, jazz, alternative and classical music to Opera Lyra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa has music for almost every taste.
Ottawa is also home to professional sports teams including the Ottawa Senators National Hockey League team, Ottawa 67’s Ontario Hockey League team and the Ottawa Wizards soccer club. There are plenty of community athletic and leisure centres that offer a variety of sports choices for participants and spectators alike.
About 30 per cent of Ottawa residents were born outside of Canada and, while English and French are the main languages spoken in the city, the next largest language groups are Mandarin and Arabic with significant others including Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
